Twlight at the Waterhole

I took this image on our Namibia tour in 2012 and have always liked it but never gotten around to posting it. I was working on a project in which I am using it so it came back to my attention. This was taken in Etosha National Park at the Okakuejo waterhole where you can observe game after dusk as you are inside the camp gate looking out at the waterhole. As you can see from the techs there was very little light left at this point after the sun had gone down leaving some nice colors in the water. As I saw this Black-backed Jackal moving along I saw that I would be able to get it in the same frame as the shadow of the giraffe, this was the result.

Fascinating abstract, Nate. I think the jackal is just sharp enough to set is apart from the giraffe and make this work. The purple tinge also gives is a bit of an "abstract color" too, since that's something of an uncommon tone.

Nate,
This is certainly different, but I am not sure I like it
Were the lights on?

Nate, this is certainly interesting and unusual. The challenge for me in this photo is to decide which image is the focal point, and perhaps that is what makes it so interesting. Great creativity. :wavey:

Thanks for the feedback guys. Ken, I can't remember if the flood lights were on yet or not but as I imagine you know they provide very little light for photography anyway.

Hello Nate

Talk about thinking outside the Box ! :) Great to see you are stepping into the realm of Shadows. :)

The movements of Mr. Jackal are great to observe here. I have come back to this image & am interested and attracted primarily to the Jackal,s movement! I like the Image capture of the Jackal but not totally sure about the Giraffe.

Thanks for sharing

Bill

Fascinating and original shot Nate, especially when I realized that the reflection was of a giraffe.

Having both animals as "shadows" works very well here, Nate. If I let my imagination go, I can imagine that the reflection is from a dinosaur... Nicely seen.

Now that's not the usual animal shot, but it's a very fascinating one! I really like the combination of the two silhouettes. Very well seen and done!

Hey Nate,

Very cool graphic look to this - and I particularly like that both the jackal and giraffe have some form of blur associated with them, albeit for different reasons. My only wish here would be for more room between the jackal and the head of the giraffe...feels a bit tight right now and perhaps it add a "in pursuit of..." feeling to the shot? Given this is pretty much natural photo art already perhaps a slight shift of the subject would/could be justified? Just a thought...but completely cool as posted.

Cheers...

Brad

Really cool idea and shot. I think the jackal by itself would be awesome. The shadow makes me wonder what it is a tree or something else.

Unique and very interesting! I like very much the blurred leg of the jackal and the blurred reflection of the giraffe. Wonderful shot!
