Clifftop sunset!

This is another one of the images that I was lucky enough too witness as well as capture while on a backcountry (lodge) trip last September in the Smokies. It's hard to explain but there was only one shot! As the sun dropped low enough for color the clouds just started pouring in over the ridgeline, this happened and then the cloud engulfed the sun and me! It was fun tripping over everything getting back to the lodge in peasoup thick fog!

Ebony RW45
Rodenstock APO Sironar-S 180mm lens
Singh-Ray 2 stop - soft step ND Grad (pulled to the bottom)
Fujichrome Velvia 100F QL
Manfrotto CarbonOne 441 w/ FLM 38 ball head
A LOT OF LUCK LUCK LUCK & LUCK!

Looks like somewhere in Lord of the Rings. Fascinating light.

I hadn't thought of it until I read Tony's post but he's right, this does look like it's straight out of "Lord of the Rings". It has a very primeval feel to it. Really a beautiful and dramatic photo, Jerry. Think you could send a little bit of that luck my way?

Wow and double wow. I agree, this is one of the most fantastic landscape shots I've ever seen, and to get it on 4x5 - unbelievable. Good use of the ND - having the foreground rocks lit up like that really makes it. :toast:

Hey Jerrymander, remember when I BEGGED you to post this shot, and suggested you request one-word responses? My two favorites were "apocalyptic" and "Tolkienesque." Hmm, Tolkienesque. I wonder what that word is derived from. Could it be? Is it? No, can't be! YES! It's the author of "Lord of the Rings"! Looks like great minds think alike.

Well, as Todd put it, "Tolkienesque". Great lighting, great image.

Very dramatic capture Jerry. These dynamic type images don't come round too often for LF photographers. A large print would be quite a spectacle.
