November 8, 2014 at Canyon Park, Huntington Beach, California This bird was formerly known as a Nutmeg Mannikin. These fellows are very shy and it took quite a while hanging around to be able to move close enough to get this shot.

Nikon D800 Nikkor 600mm RAW Manual 1/2500 f/5.6 ISO 1600 flash with a better beamer White Balance Auto Tripod with a Wimberley Gimbal Processed in Lightroom, PhotoshopCC14, & NIK. This is a significant crop.

Thank you in advance for your observations and comments. Please let me know if I have overlooked anything. :toast:

Great detail in the bird, well taken. The BG is busy, but IMHO not a distraction but supports very well the image of the bird. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent as posted, Patrick. Subtle use of fill flash.

I agree this species is flighty in Southern California. Yet in Hawaii, they are completely brazen and will raid plates of food at outdoor restaurants.

Nice capture Patrick ! Great details. The busy background shows the bird's habitat very well. :toast:

Tjie reminded me that Canyon Park is in Costa Mesa, not Huntington Beach, which is nearby. :wavey:

Good job of getting the bird in habitat without letting the habitat taint the picture -- well worth the patience to get this pretty bird
