Today was my last full day in Zion this year. The weather here this autumn has been uncommonly warm up to this point. For anybody in the local area who might be thinking of visiting the park this weekend, there is still plenty of good autumn foliage in Zion Canyon and other lower elevation areas. But the weather will be turning much colder this weekend, and temperatures are predicted to drop to below freezing overnight for the next several days and remain more seasonal for the next week or so. So the good color in the canyon won't last much longer.

This photograph was taken three days ago along the Virgin River.

very nice Jim; I like the leading line of rocks and the colorful foliage downstream.

Great fall color and fine job on the comp, with a sweet little classic S curve leading in. How long did it take you to set up the rocks?  Real nice, Jim.

I like the s-curve in the rocks and the way that it culminates in the larger middle ground rock before directing my eye to the foliage in the background. This works nicely, Jim.

Great job with the placement of the rocks, Jim, if not in the creek ( ) at least in the comp. Perfect s-curve lead to the great bg. Top notch Zion shot, and a bit different as well. :toast:

Very nice, Jim, always good to see your takes on Zion. I think it was probably a good choice to have the rocks come in from the llhc, especially since as a photographer or hiker one would want to use those rocks, but for me, the first thing I was drawn to was the color of the water, and that leaves me wanting more, since the stream abruptly leaves the frame stage left up top. Maybe if the rocks were coming from the lrhc  Not trying to be picky, obviously the leading line is important here cause if you crop out the bg color, it loses a lot.

Excellent composition. I pretty much like everything about this...the line of rocks nicely anchored but the large boulder, perfect exposure for the water, beautiful color, and a sense of balance. Great work

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Stan, I'm not sure if I completely understand your comment, but I think I might have an alternate composition which would seem to address the issues you describe.

Another fine look at Zion, Jim. I was wondering as I looked at your later post what two steps left would look like, and here it is. That large downstream rock makes a fine focal point and you've to some lovely colors in the trees. Both versions work very well.

Jim,

Your images from Zion have been fantastic, and this one is another winner. The lead in with the rocks, and the line they produce is perfect. I love the two varying colors in the water, and this leads the viewer to the beautiful fall colors in the background.

Such beautiful photography!!!
