Swamp Buggy Lake

A late Fall pano of Swamp Buggy Lake next to the Denali Highway just before you get to the Susitna River crossing. The sun had just come out as a large rainstorm passed over so the mountain was generating it's own cloud as the South facing slopes started warming up. You can see how shallow this small lake is also.

Please view large. Panoramas don't work well small.

Sony DSC-R1, 5 vertical photos stitched. All frames: ISO-160, f2.8, 1/200, tripod

Its much better large Gary. The contrast feels a little bit on the punchy side and the landscape has a slightly disconcerting curve across its width which may or may not be a natural effect, but it is is a very pretty scene.

Excellent photo of the fall color and atmospheric conditions, Gary. Nicely done. I agree with Ian about the curve.

I like the nice light, color and the very interesting cloud formation over the mountain. I do agree about the curve.

By now, you're probably aware of the curve (: I like the interesting sky and lovely scene you captured. Nice work

Thanks for the critiques/comments everyone. The curve bothered me also, especially since I used level bubbles to set both the tripod and the camera at horizontal before shooting the frames. When you pick an elevation that is approximately eye/camera level (near the tops of the red brush on the left) and run the image down to the bottom of the monitor for a straight edge you will see that the top of the red brush on both sides and all the way back to the mountain in the center is pretty darn straight. Consequently, I'm pretty sure the leveling was effective and it's actually straight despite the obvious appearance of a curve caused by the perspective of the scene. I suppose what I should do is what Rolls Royce supposedly used to do with their vertical grille and actually bend the image in a reverse curve to compensate for the perspective curve. Then it would look straight to the brain despite the fact that it would actually be distorted.

Gary, I see what you are saying about the perceived curve being an illusion. It seems like the perception is due to the curvature of the lake shore, and is not due to your processing or composition. It seems less noticeable in the large photo anyway. Nice work!

Gary, I like this view and the conditions you captured it in. Nice light, colors and those clouds look great. You did a nice job explaining the curve as well. The large version looks especially nice.

Gary - It seems you were after symmetry in the image with the comp of the FG, mnt and sky. If that was the case, I might crop off the right to keep it more in keeping with the left; but I can understand any hesitation as that might defeat 1 or 2 of your vertical shots  so maybe not what you were after. I do like how the cloud is born of the mnt. :toast:

This image definitely delivers a lot more than the thumbnail would suggest. I like the scattered autumn color and those clouds hugging the peak really add a lot of interest. This is very nice, Gary!!

It's a neat scene, Gary, but it does feel like the colors are a bit strong. I don't have a problem with this "curve", the pond edges in the middle distances and along the mountain's base look natural to me.

This is a sweet image Gary, and needs to be seen larger to appreciate the view. The colors look clean, crisp, and clear, and I love that mountain erupting from the top.

The curve does indeed look like a perception thing. Maybe try to mess around with it, and see what it looks like, but very nice as presented.

The colors and processing look fine to me. You have captured a dramatic and interesting atmospheric phenomenon. The FG looks a little bland to me.
