Odd Rack

Not the best image but an interesting one with the unusual rack on this black-tailed buck. Last year (assuming this is the same deer), his rack was somewhat similar but smaller. He's a big guy so whatever the cause of this doesn't affect his ability to eat and grow big. On the side with the deformity, he reminds me of a water buffalo. This guy was all over the place today. He'd chase a doe, then go off, then come back for another go around. I could see why bucks lose weight during the rut. His hind legs have dark staining on them from his urinating to make himself smell irresistible. Not in my book, however. For this image, I warmed it up some, then added contrast to help the antlers and his body stand out from the BG. I also upped clarity and reduced highlights and whites some. All the yellow grape leaves in the BG are a distraction but I can't do much about them without changing too much of the rest of the image. My focus was off a bit and his head is a little soft. The is full frame. No crop. Your comments and critiques would be welcome and appreciated.

Good image of this antler abnormality. The position you photographed him in shows the antlers well. It is a bit soft, but IMHO does not distract from the content of the photo. My guess is he suffered antler damage early in his life and he may never have a normal set. Would be interesting to see if any young bucks show up with this abnormality. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, Peter, I hope you get some more of this unusual guy. I agree with you assessments of minor negatives.

You caught a nice pose from this unique critter, Peter. I could see cropping out the bright spots on the top 1/8 of the image. Is this on the American River trail?

This is bizarre Peter. Fascinating antlers, and nice shot of this buck. You might think about shooting at a lower f-stop/larger aperture (f4, f5.6) that might reduce the DOF and blur out some of the more distracting features in the BG?
