Zigzag 'Stabilimentum'

Another shot of Argiope aurantia from our garden. Commonly known as the black and yellow garden spider, zipper spider, corn spider, and writing spider, because of the similarity of the web stabilimenta to writing.

The Stabilimentum (reinforced area) in a web makes a vertical zigzag band above and below the middle of the web. Juveniles make a circular stabilimentum in the center of the web.
F/18, 1/200th, ISO 640, 1D M3, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 with fill & tripod.

Excellent close up mage of this Argiope, Howard, with good detail in both the spider and the web. Well done. :toast:

Howard:

Excellent image showing both the spider and web clearly. You have controlled the flash well as it is not obvious in the image. I have been looking at webs around my neighborhood for the stabilimenta but have not seen them; not sure if this is a species specific phenomenon or environmental influence.

Fine look at this spider and her web, Howard. I like how you've got her surrounded by the oof green branches in the background and the details in her and her web. You flash use is very well subtle.

Howard ..fine detail of the spider and the web...and go by what the others have commented. However the composition of the frame overall ..could be better ...may be a different point of view ..?

Nice image of spider and web. I really appreciated the mini-tutorial. I guess I never gave a great deal of thought to spider webs before but now I'm interested in discovering the unique differences between them. Your knowledge makes your image even more fascinating.
