Final Days
by Jerry Austin
I came across this old doe at the local Nature Center. She was very thin and she moved very slowly. There is something not quite right about her eyes. It is obvious to me that she is very old. This is probably her last winter. She had no fawn with her or any other deer close by. She has probably done her biological duty with many fawns raised over the years. It won't be long before she slips away. Comments and critiques welcome.

Somewhat sad but "it's a part of life" tale. Are there any predators (coyotes?) in the area? I'm lucky enough to live in an area with a lot of deer (and elk) and ecologically functional populations of several predators (bears, coyotes, wolves, cougars) and it just dawned on me now that I've never seen an ungulate in my area that looked old.
Cheers...
Brad
Brad, there are a few coyotes in the area. I am sure at some point, they will notice this doe and it will be over.
