Ballantine - remember the 3 rings with that old beer? This fawn has the 3 rings and I immediately stuck this name with him. He seems to be full of spunk and raring to go. You have to love their energy. I thought this was just a nice portrait of a young deer. A button buck due to 2 small nubs on the top of his head. There was a lot of other grass and another deer in the original comp but I thought that stuff didn't really support the image so it all was cropped out. I'm left with about 40-50% of the original. It looks like enough to keep the IQ alright. Other than cropping, I did very little to this. I added some temp to get the grass color more correct then brought some detail out of the black, added a little contrast (already pretty good), and a bit of clarity. Light was still ok but getting towards too bright. Happens quickly. Your comments and critiques are welcome.

Hi Peter, I recall seeing many energetic young deer over the years, so I know what you mean, even though this particular pose seems to convey a more static, focused mood. Isolating it with this crop seems to work well, but I think there is a lot of extra background at the top of the frame that adds nothing to the image. (If you are reluctant to crop a lot, I wonder if keeping some parts closer to the button buck might be possible. (If that doesn't look good compositionally, I think it's better to accept limited resolution ... unless you are on a photo critique site where technical details of a photograph often seem more important than its content.)

Wayne's comment " I think it's better to accept limited resolution ... unless you are on a photo critique site where technical details of a photograph often seem more important than its content" made me laugh out loud! I agree best comp would be some more from the top...I would ideally wish for some reflection in the eyes.
