I discovered this Black Widow under our kitchen sink, in a dark corner yesterday.. It pays to be vigilant ;)
I moved it to some potted mint leaves near our back sliding glass door, and shot towards the overcast outside light.

The Southern Black Widow has a shiny, black, globular abdomen with the well known distinctive red hourglass on the underside. Only the female black widow bites humans, and she bites only when disturbed, especially while protecting her eggs. Of the 30,000 'types' of spiders, the black widow is probably the one best known and feared.

The tensile strength of spider silk is comparable to that of steel wire of the same thickness. The density of steel is about six times that of silk, silk is correspondingly stronger than steel wire of the same weight.

F/13, .4 sec, ISO 640, 5D2, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 + 1.4x and flash with a wire & mirror lockup. Manual focus with the emphasis on the spiders distinctive red markings. Near full frame(96%)with Exif data attached.

Excellent image of this BW's distinctive red abdomen and the spider silk, Howard. Excellent detail and perspective against the lighter smooth bg. I've never seen a BW in person, but it was instantly recognizable from your image. Thanks also for the education. Hard to believe that spider silk is so strong. Finally, kudos to you for moving the spider outside rather than killing it, but my wife would have made me drive it at least to the next county. :toast:

I knew this was yours the minute I saw the thumbnail. You're the only one I know who consistently makes spiders beautiful. After reading your post, I decided it was a result of you deep interest and respect for them. Stunning image.

Wow, Howard, up close and personal with a somewhat dangerous critter. I've known folks who got bitten, but don't think I've ever seen one in person. It's a fine shot with the blacks and greens against a soft, subtly warm background. Now I know that all I need to do is turn that black spider over to see if she's dangerous...

Very cool shot and interesting commentary. If I found it in my house I too would move it outside to a safe place then I think I might call Terminix in case any relatives were still around.
