Obscured Horizon + 100% Crop

I went for a hike this morning in the Santa Barbara mountains. I brought my new Olympus OM-D E-M10 4/3 camera. I caught some nice clouds over the ocean, which gave the camera a good test.

So far, I am very impressed by the little camera. I have yet to run a print from one of its files, but I think I can make a nice 16x20. The lenses are pretty sharp and the files are relatively sharp and clean (so far only tried ISO 200 and Low). It will never replace my DSLR or the 4x5, but for a light small camera to take on a hike, it is real nice.

You can just see the Channel Islands below the clouds and the edge of one on the right side. I took the liberty of removing several oil rigs from the image. There are numerous out in the Santa Barbara channel.

It's an interesting "cloud scape", with a nice bit of ocean at the bottom, Harley. Your camera does seem to have handled the bright light quite well.

Looks like a competent camera. As for the image, it might be improved by cropping it to around 1200 x 650 (semi-pano), cropping from the top.

I agree about a bit off the top and to really see what you can do with the camera, A zoomed in crop of the great clouds in the center would be interesting.....

Here is a crop area at 100% with no sharpening. That should give you some idea of what the file looks like. The file has had several layers applied, as well, curves, etc.

This is very serene to view and the various shades of blue and white work very nicely together, Harley. I too like the crop suggestion. Looks like a pretty nice camera to have around on those occasions when you want to travel light.

Looks like the new camera is doing it's job for you, Harley. I like this a lot. The light is wonderful. You could crop the sky a bit for a different look, or tweak the sky contrast in the upper left a bit. The central cloud bank, the long stratus cloud, and the light on the water look great.

Obscurity never looked so good Harley:smile:
I'd say the test run of your mirrorless cam shows some great potential, a fine image IMHO.
Seems we both got what we wanted from Santa
Merry Christmas! :toast:

PS: Our new pup must've got a hold of the 5D2 manual I had set on the sofa yesterday when my back was turned..
I'm still looking for the damn thing!

Looks like an aerial with that low line of clouds. Which as a cloudscape works very well. I like those silvery tones.
