I generally try to avoid cropping petals but a crop seemed to work for this yellow iris close up; an archive shot taken indoors on a tripod.

Ian: Sure works for me. I like experimenting with different crops/comps and think you did well with this one. I also like your DOF choice. Very nicely done.>=))>

Gorgeous, Ian. Love the comp. I usually find it trite when someone uses "sensuous" to describe a flower image, but I might make an exception here. Wonderfully composed and taken. The lines and curves are terrific. There are a couple of spots on the lower petal (bottom middle and far right, 1/3 down from the top), and a little line thing (far right, 2/3 of the way down) that, being a purist, I would make go away.

Lovely Ian - the very strong closeup really works in this case, and makes the petal cropping a non-issue, in my view.

The cropped petals seem to work just fine, here, Ian. I say that because of the overall comp and how it comes together. I like the juxtaposition of the lines in the petals– up-going in the upper left against the elegant downward curve of the petal on the right. POF is so well chosen. The clipped petal edges serve to keep the viewers gaze in the frame. Traa-laaa, for the dance of the Iris Petals.

Ian, This composition works for me. The flowing lines in the petal remind me of waterfall. I like your frame design too.

Really lovin' this, Ian. I find most iris shots ineffective ( including my own) cause they're an extremely difficult subject. This is great.

I like it very much, but for goodness sake make the hair and the little dots go away! Kidding. If Scott hadn't spotted them, I probably would have missed them. I think the crop is just fine.
