This Sandhill Crane was photographed December 30, 2014 at Bosque del Apache along with Keith Bauer. That morning the light was perfect and the freezing night before and that morning left many of the cranes with ice bracelets. I have never been as cold as I was that morning and the day after.

Nikon D4 Nikkor 600mm 1/500 f/8 ISO800 White Balance Auto RAW Tripod Processed in Lightroom, NIK, TK and Photoshopcc2014.

Thank you for your observations and comments. :toast:

Patrick,
Beautiful light. The larger image shows great detail and I love that Ice bracelet. You've captured the golden hue early morning light on this crane and it's just glowing. The birds must be oblivious to the cold water. Amazing. Great capture Patrick!
Have a safe trip back home.

Just beautiful shot of this crane in flight! Light is excellent and captured so well. Hope you've thawed out by now!

WOW! This is about as good as it gets Patrick. I imagine it was pretty tough for a southern Californian such as yourself but as long as you didn't lose any fingers or toes it was well worth the discomfort. All the classic Bosque traits captured perfectly, very well done! :toast:

This is sweet Patrick and the ice bracelets at the dividing line between wet and dry is very prominent and unique in the larger version. As mentioned, the light is pretty near perfect along with the wing position and the details.
What is surprising to me is that a 'Left Coast Beach Bum' has a few goose bumps on a chilly New Mexico morning and it's the coldest he has ever been, didn't you have your wind breaker with you ?

The morning light at the refuge at this location can be really sweet. Glad we had the opportunity to use that light to create some nice frames. The ice bracelets just add to the interest. Nice capture.

Excellent, Patrick. The ice bracelets are just ... icing.

The temperatures around Bosque are only chilly. Come visit Alaska in winter if you want cold.
