Eating at the Vatican

I have named my backyard the Vatican because of all the Cardinals that run (and fly all over) the place. I caught this female on a windy day as she stopped just long enough. I've been attempting to get decent shots of them, but just recently was able to move closer and get some worth sharing. Small changes made in LR5 and a slight crop off of right side.

All comments and critiques are more than welcome.

I like the pose off the cardinal. Reasonably sharp. A bit more light in the eye would be great. I'm distracted by the visual mass of the big stumps. The balance between the small bird and the large stumps isn't ideal. The concept of visual weight on this image would be really tough to balance with the elements in the image.

Really nice background. The cardinal is relatively sharp. Your shutter speed was pretty slow. Not sure if the slow shutter speed contributed to any softness. Even on a tripod, a small head movement of the cardinal will show up at 1/60s. The 7D Mk II has very good high ISO performance. ISO 1600 is not a problem with the Mk II. Next time, I would up the ISO and increase the shutter speed to ensure slow shutter speed is not a factor.

Nice soft colors in this image. I do agree regarding the distraction of the large chunks of wood, not sure what you could do about it a tighter crop would increase the slight softness in the image. Still a nice photo, thanks for sharing.
