Oak Leaf and Ice

by Bruce Lovelace

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted February 10, 201571 views6 comments
On a walk with my dog a few weeks ago, I glanced over at the curb of our street and noticed some interesting ice formations in the street gutter. It was a bitter day, but I had to return to this spot with my camera.

The wind was strong, but the ice was holding onto its prize. The sun was low in the sky and strong enough to illuminate the ice crystals sharply.

Welcome to NPN, Bruce! A fine first offering, with an interesting juxtaposition of a red oak leaf with the ice crystals. Good eye. A couple of procedural suggestions: on your large image, you posted only at 920 pixels on the long side. You are entitled to a maximum of 1200 as long as you can bring it in under 500KB; if you have them recorded, the techs on the shot are helpful to the criticizer, which is in turn helpful to you. Good work on this. I look forward to seeing more and to your critiques as well.

Hi Bruce. I'll second Phil's welcome to NPN, and add a welcome to the macro & close up gallery. You did a great job "seeing" this image and then composing and capturing it for the leaf on the interesting ice shapes. Makes for a real interesting image. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

The ice formations are neat and you've set them off very well with the warmth of the oak leaf. Welcome to NPN, Bruce!

Welcome to NPN Bruce. This image would also qualify as an intimate landscape. You've only received 18 views in this gallery. You would undoubtedly get more visibililty and feedback if you had posted it in landscape. Something fo keep in mind.
