Just before the snow

A really nice sunset, just before a minor snowstorm would take me by surprise. Because of having so much fun taking this image, I had not looked behind me for a long time, while lots of clouds had been traveling my way from precisely that direction, carrying a fresh load of the "white gold". Fortunately my beloved "home away from home" (= tent) was not far away.

f/16, ISO 100, 30 s, 6 stop ND, 2 stop grad ND.

C&C welcome, large version is included.

Roel

Is it just me, or does the foreground look a bit dark? It looks darker here than in my editing software....

I like the way the trees at the top balance the rocks in the llc and the depth of the image. But I find myself wishing for more if that interesting sky in the image. It has some nice color and movement.

I really like the ground-level point of view. It gives a great sense of amplitude, and enhances the detail on the snow! :toast:

Excellent effect, I think because assured composition, sharpness where it's important, masterful colour management.
I find very effective that sort of "purified" white of the stones.
All the best,

The foreground doesn't look too dark to me, Roel. I like the green moss and snow covered rocks. I'm with Richard here in that I'd like to see more of the sky. The long exposure shows some nice movement and I think there should be more. Real nice as is though.

Roel, the foreground looks fine to me. You could try a little tuning and get at least some of the blue cast on the snow.

Hi Roel,

Well worth winter camping in a tent for this shot. More of the sky would add a lot to the image, but taking Phil's suggestion of working on the snow may work very well too............................Jim

I like this a lot. The white and green rocks are a bit of a mind bender and almost abstract and nice sky. Foreground looks fine to me.

Neat point of view, Roel. I really like the contrast between the moss and snow/ice on the rocks and how you've focused on them in a very pleasant setting. BTW, I do think pictures tend to post a bit dark, especially the darker tones when you let the NPN software create the 720 px version.

I like the pov and image a lot. There seems a bit of color cast though.

Hi Roel,

This image has a lot on interest for me with the fg rock combination of mossy greens and winter snow. It is a bit unusual, well at least for me ;), but it works very well. I think the fg brightness looks great. This scene seem pretty bright, and I would think the trees on the right would show up a bit brighter. Maybe brighten up the shadows a bit, but they look pretty dark already.
How do you feel about the trees?

These are just tiny thoughts,

beautiful work Roel :toast:

I love it when it snows on a beach that boundary between colour and monochrome is very appealing.

I have to admit I'm a sunrise/sunset chaser.  Your low perspective and choice of lens really accentuates the massive expanse of the scene, plus the colors make it magical.
