Bison River Crossing
by Jerry Austin
On my last visit to YNP, I watched the breeding activity along the Yellowstone River in the Hayden Valley late one afternoon. I noticed this lone bison on a steep hill on the other side of the river. The bison seemed determined to join the rest of the herd, so after a brief hesitation at the edge of the river, walked in and began to swim across. Ads I watched the bison, it seemed that the swim was longer and more difficult than the bison anticipated. I saw the wide eyed look captured in this image. It almost looks like there is a bit of panic in the eyes. Well, the bison made it safely across and joined the rest of the herd, so all was well.
