For a few years, I had talked with two other photographers about venturing into this remote area. Finally, last weekend the anticipation became reality with good photography weather in the forecast.
Nikon D810, 16-35mm @ 16mm, ISO 64.
Blend of 2 images for dof, f/14 for foreground sand, f/8 for pinnacles

Remarkable image! Lots of details to view. Almost think there is too much FG. A very good image, glad you were able to get there. Thanks for sharing.

Looking at the small version I thought there was too much fg, but looking at the large version I changed my mind. It balances well with the sky. Maybe crop out a tiny band at the bottom to get rid of the smaller branches (so cropping just below your watermark)? That would give a more "quiet" foreground to me, since the small pieces of wood are a bit distracting. But it's a minor nit, looks like a very interesting place!

Looks like a very interesting place and well worth your wait. Lots to explore in this image. I'm leaning towards a little less fg to give the sky a bit more play. Nice as is though.

This is really well done, Doug. The dune ripples are nice leading lines. No nits from me.

Thank you for your comments and thoughts. Roel, rather than crop, I decided cloning out some of those roots would be better. I was surprised how long the roots stretched under the sands to absorb precious moisture.

You've got lots of good parts here Doug. The subtle colors in the sky are great. All those formations in the middle are also great and it sure looks like it would be fun to roam around. The patterns in the foreground sand are interesting also. In the small version, the foreground doesn't add much, but there's a very nice "opening up" in the larger version that lets the foreground add much more. I actually like the roots and the story that they tell of the struggle for survival.

Nice job on this, Doug. I would probably vote to clone the roots, but either way I like the comp and what a seriously cool place to explore.

An impressive expanse and very beautiful, Doug! The exposures and blending are perfect, resulting in a very natural balance of light. The details are impressive and I like that it's not over saturated or exaggerated. The large version should be mandatory as it has a far greater presence (as if you were standing right there) and much more fine detail to look at. As for the foreground roots, absolutely do not remove them! That's one of those many impressive details that makes it so real! Very nice photo! :toast: :toast:
