Oklahoma Elk

SW Oklahoma has a healthy elk population on and around the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. I encountered this bull along with two cows grazing on a ridge line just before they descended on the north side and were not seen again. I would like to have had a better b/g, but I will take what I can get having not seen many at this close distance.

Thanks in advance for your comments and critiques.

I'm glad you reminded me that Oklahoma has elk in the Wichita mountains. I remember reading an article on that subject. Interesting looking fellow. The G2 tine on the right side is enormous. Very unusual. I like the compositional aspects of this. The elk has a nice head turn and the snow covered boulders and grass are great. From my experience, trying to capture a subject against a white background is tough. I have struggled with capturing decent shots of eagles perched high in trees against a pure white winter sky. The camera struggles with the proper exposure. Even with some compensation, it is never as accurate as it would be without the white sky. So, I think you made the most out of this situation.

For what apparently was a quick shot this image is very good! The bull is in a nice position. I do wish the right side antlers would stand out from the BG better, but you have to take what you are given. Was it snowing? Thanks for sharing.

Hi Greg,

I really like the pose here - and there's certainly no doubt that you effectively separated the subject from the background!

I do find the background to be almost overwhelming here - I'm wondering if even slightly reducing the exposure on it (even if that means it goes a bit greyish) might help in "taming it down" a little?

Cheers...and thanks for sharing this one...

Thanks Brad,

I've darkened exposure overall and then tried to selectively lighten the exposure on the head and neck area alone. I also brought the shadows down a bit. I do like the image better this way, but still would like to see the neck area lighten up a bit to get more detail there. I do think this about all I can do with it without going to far.
