The Staredown

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this. It appeared the snowy egret was actually viewing this log as a threatening being and seemed to be trying to stare it down for quite some time. After at least 5 minutes, the egret turned away as if to indicate it was refusing to continue to participate in this, and would not have anything more to do with this log. It was very cold, misty, and foggy. Northern Sacramento Valley. There is a fair amount of noise in the larger version.

D300, 300f4, 1.4tc, 1/250, f6.3, ISO 400.

C & C greatly appreciated.

Cool catch, Jim, I'm chuckling. The face in the log is a great addition and really does make it look like a stare down. The larger version shows the details (especially in the heron's face and neck) better, but I think a bit of dodging to pull more attention to the heron's neck and head would be good.

That wooden 'gator would make me do a double take, too. In addition to the humor, I really enjoy the delicate, soft tones in this image.

The expression is priceless Jim. That is a mean looking log! Nice catch.
