Eland at iso 6400

We found a herd of bachelor male Elands on the way back from a game drive in West Coast National Park of South Africa last September. I had never been able to get close to this species before. However it was right at the time the sun had set. I started out at iso 1600 and as it became darker worked my way up to 6400. This was one of the last shots of the session but despite the high iso it was my favorite. It's full frame.

Canon 5D3 500F4 1/50 F4, iso 6400, lens balanced on window ledge.

The image quality at this ridiculously high ISO is impressive. Yeah, there is a little noise in the background, but not much. I love the head on shot of this massive guy. That neck is impressive. I also like the vegetation at the bottom. It kind of frames him. Well done.

Impressive animal and impressive photo! It looks like an image taken in low light without looking artificial. I have to add, while I was at the Cincinnati Zoo there was an eland with only 1 horn. A young boy pointed to it and said: look mom a unicorn, they are an endangered species". Thanks for sharing.

Sweet portrait, Nate. It looks really nice in the soft evening light. Image quality looks good at 6400 too.

Cool expressions and ISO 6400 looks to be usable. I'm seeing some bluish / magenta in this, which is of course common at this hour.

The lighting is clearly low and the effect is very pleasing. I like it for the sense of dark but saturated color, unlike the bright light we usually see with African wildlife.

Very nice image. The soft warm light is unique and pleasing. The image quality at that iso is reassuring as I am wanting to purchase the 5D3.

Hi Nate! Very pleasing portrait of this Eland. I really like the soft tones throughout which match the mood and feel of the expression and overall moment. Very nice tonal range despite the high ISO as well.
