March 10, 2014 San Diego, California Met Charlie Van Tassel at the lake and we were fortunate to be there when the Grebes were rushing, which my research tells me is a mating ceremony, although sometimes two males do it to attract a female.

Nikon D4 Nikkor 600mm 1.4TC 850mm ISO640 1/800 f/16 RAW White Balance Auto Processed in Lightroom, PhotoshopCC2014, NIK and TK. Tripod & Wimberley Gimbal

Great shot. I'm envious; I'd love to get one like this. Nicely composed with them rushing into the scene. I think these are Western Grebes (Clark's have white surrounding the eyes and a bright yellow bill).

I sure hope to see and photograph this one day. Nice job, from what I understand and would think, getting this in the frame isn't as easy as one might think. Looks like the light may have been a little challenging and you handled it well.

Very cool Patrick, if this were mine I would crop a bit from the right - it feels like a bit much empty space there. Although this would center them more, the splash on the left balances the comp, and it would make them larger in the frame. Although the sharpness looks excellent here I probably would have chosen a stop less depth of field and a corresponding increase in shutter speed. Nicely done. :toast:

Wonderful behavioral image. I have spent considerable time and effort attempting to capture this courtship dance without your success. Agree they are Western Grebes. Thanks for inspiring me to try again.
