Future of nature?
by Tom Falley
Increasingly millions move to the big cities. For them nature may be a piece of open sky, a tree lined street and some flower beds. We tend to think of nature as "wilderness", often caged as opposed to "free range". By that I mean parks.
Here Pudong, across the Huang Pu river from Shanghai proper (or Pu Xi). This glittering riverside ghost rising from the rice paddys of not long ago is the pretty face China puts on this historic seaport. Not so far behind the facade of towering glass and steel are mile upon mile of identical six story apartment blocks (no elevators), the only deviation being a red or blue roof. Perhaps a million souls abode within my gaze from my western hotel.
