There is a wonderful butterfly exhibit at the park for the next month. There are thousands of butterflies and reportedly over 100 species within the screened area.

Nikon D800 Nikkor 24-120 120mm ISO3200 1/400 f/5 White Balance Auto RAW Processed in Lightroom, PhotoshopCC2014, TK and NIK.

I can see I could have done a much better job with my settings and nect time should bring my 105mm with the macro flash.

Thank you in advance for your comments. :toast:

The butterfly stands out nicely against the background. A wider aperture if available would have helped this even more. Not sure if the flash would help as the background would go quite dark and loose the real world feel.

I think that this is a beautiful image, Patrick. The colors are vibrant but very natural, the light is very appealing, and the depth of field works very well. There is a bit of graininess, but it does not bother me at all!! :toast:

A beautiful and delicate image. Great colors and very well done with the comp and DOF. I might tone down the brightest areas of the background, but that is really minor for me. I like it!

Nice detail and wonderful color. I agree with Harley's suggestion regarding the background; it doesn't need much, though. Nice image, Patrick.

Stunner, Patrick...congrats on the WP! I read your comment about hoping for a better job with the settings next time but good grief there's not much room for improvement here. If the butterfly was fairly still and gave you a moment, I can see sliding the SS/ISO back a bit. I'm undecided if I join in with the other suggestions re DOF and background brightness. Your DOF here shows the habitat without competing for attention with the subject...shooting more wide open would be attractive but this is, IMO, more unique and a better story-telling image. Really nice image all-around.
