Warm Alchemy

This is another badlands image but a bit tighter comp than the last one to create more abstraction. Much of the color and texture were resuscitated in Photoshop . . . and to a large degree took on a life of their own. I proof using inkjet prints, and this is the direction things went. It turned out warmer than I expected, but I like how the colors seem to soften the roughness that's actually present in this scene.

Your thoughts and recommendations are always appreciated.

Gorgeous Tony. The scenery itself is breathtaking (especially to a Florida boy!), and your processing is always superb.

Wonderful set of badlands, Tony. If there is anybody better at pulling every bit of color from a scene than you, I would like to meet them. I am always thoroughly impressed with not only the scenes you photograph, but how you are able to present them in thier best light. Excellent work. :toast:

My first impression is - god damn this is strange. But the longer I look at it the more I appreciate how good this really is. The closest thing that comes to mind are Georgia OKeefes paintings at New Mexico. She, too, greatly exaggerates the colors to get her point across and they are masterful. The composition is excellent with all those interwoven ridges with a good frame of higher ridges on the sides. The color range is really interesting with a few blues mixed in here and there. It's such a unique style that it's hard to critique it. I do believe that the lower right corner does not have the sense of the rest of the image. It's softer and out of character with the sharpness (it's not really sharpness) of the rest of composition.

It's a very emotionally intense style. Not very calming. It screams "look at me". Lot of tension in those diagonal lines and tonal variation. Fascinating.

Great take and that lighting,,,, WOW. Badlands is an amazing place and your choice of composition works very well. No suggestions for improvement. Like it just as is.

Masterfully done Tony. I'm amazed at the amount of color you can pull out of your scenes. The details, tones and textures in this are just great and the processing is wonderful. Pure art. :toast:

I dreamed about this image last night. And in the dream these mountains morphed into a burning log in a campfire. And now this morning I realized that that's the fascination with your work. The fascination of fire. They're like looking at a log all aglow with flames licking it's sides or embers still radiating in a hot pit.

Terrific colors and textures here, Tony. I like the complexity of the scene. I do find myself wanting to explore more towards the edges so I'd like to see a bit less edge burning.

Gorgeous abstract Tony, really your style. I love your take on these landscapes, way different than what most others (including me) would do.

Tony, I'm totally enjoying the large version! This comp looks great and I love the never ending layers layers in this scene. The colors and detail you pulled out of this are wonderful. Beautiful badlands scene! :toast:

The colors are quite strong despite the general darkness of the scene - it gives rise to a very "painting-like" atmosphere.

Definitely a lot of tonal work to get those colors but impressive as always. Could see a bit cooler like you mentioned as well as the shadows are a bit warm here.

Nice work!

Fabulous composition. The green patch jars a bit among all those warm tones otherwise I like the colour palette.

Ah yes, a "Tony Kuyper". Feels good to see this. A very coherent composition. I can't comment on the colors. Knowing your work, and having seen some of this in the US, I bet there is a mismatch , but the colors yet look credible.

Didn't I see this in a dream somewhere?...

Your take on scenes like this is always fascinating Tony, and I enjoy them in a unique way. (A little like that painting of Kramer, for you Seinfeld fans out there, "It is a loathesome, offensive brute. Yet I can't look away." )

Exquisite textures and mixtures of color! Not sure if it is how the image views on this site or not, but I see a tinge of blue throughout the image?

Simply stunning, Tony. With a plethora of possible compositions of these undulating hills, the composition you chose seems perfect, distilled to an amazing tapestry of line and form, color and tone. Stunning art, as always.

The bold color is the hook but its the flow of the composition keeps me on the line. Breathtakingly beautiful. :toast:

As it was opening I thought you'd made the trip to Zhangye in China. It's remarkable to see something so similar in what is essentially your back door. I truly love images like this.
