I took this image of my cousins dog last year when he was about 1 year old. He was playing with some other dogs and I didn't have time to change my settings to a slower shutterspeed. It was kind of a grey day, but the subject was gorgeous

8 commentsThis is a fine look at a handsome dog. You've got great details in his coat and the bright green grass adds a nicely contrasting color. I am chuckling about 1/1328 shutter speed...has me thinking of Mr. Spock saying approximately....Captain.
Your choice of low camera angle makes Rafa present a nice, regal appearance!
You're right, Betty-Lou, the subject is indeed gorgeous! The photo is pretty darn nice also! Nicely composed with perfect placement in the frame, a wide enough aperture to isolate the dog from the background and the focus is definitely in the right zone to get excellent detail in all parts of the dog. Nicely done
Wow - Rafa sure is a beautiful dog, Betty-Lou! Everything looks awfully nice here, although the bokeh (out of focus zone in the background) looks a little funky to me...I'm wondering if you masked it out when applying sharpening? If not, that might help a bunch. I'm also noticing an apparent halo above Rafa's back and in front of his neck, which can be caused from a few different steps in processing but is something worth resolving on such a beautiful portrait of such a beautiful dog!
The low camera angle is perfect, as is the composition IMO. I like the inclusion of the weathered fence behind him, and the pose and look on the face you captured makes this a genuine winner, which is why I thought I should mention those possible tweaks for improvement!
Thanks guys for your comments. I am not sure about the shutterspeed either Mark. That's what the metadata says. I remember using the manual mode, but not putting in that strange shutterspeed.
John, thanks for the advice on my postprocessing. Unfortunately the halo on the back of Rafa was already there in the RAW-file, but during postprocessing it got a little worse, So I masked it out en did some cloning, but was not able to get rid of it completely. And as you suggested I masked out the sharpening of the soft background, so here is the final result.
Hi Betty-Lou,
I like the second version that you posted. The composition of this photo is very nice. ...................Jim

Beautiful dog, Betty-Lou and your settings provided just the right dof for this image. The repost is a definite improvement.
