Hi everyone! Here's yet another from our recent trip to the coast. As you may be able to tell, we found lots of bird life, haha. Anyway, I was walking along a trail in the evening (right before sunset) when I glanced over at the water and spotted this cormorant. I thought he chose a really cool perch, so I got as close as he was comfortable with and started photographing. I tried both horizontals and verticals, but the verticals are my favourite because it shows off his reflection in the still water. Because of how cooperative he was, I was able to try different angles. I would have LOVED to get a really low angle on him, unfortunately there was a cliff with a 10-15 foot drop I would've had to climb down, and at the bottom it was super deep mud that I'm pretty sure would've swallowed me whole, haha
.
I'd love to know what y'all think of this one. I was going to call the image "Reflection of a Cormorant", but it was 2 characters over the limit so this'll have to do.
As a side note, the colour is a little funky on the 720px so please click on the image to view the larger version for better colour and detail.
Thanks for lookin'! ![]()

5 commentsclassic cormorant pose, with great light and an even better reflection. well done.
sweet shot Jenaya. great light and a nice reflection. I'd be interested in seeing a looser comp if you have it, that includes the whole rock and give a bit more breathing room for the bird/reflection combo. I don't think the angle of the shot is a negative at all.
Very nice reflection image, Jenaya. I like the composition and colors and the exposure of the cormorant is right on. My only nit is that the composition would feel a little better if the log went all the way down to the water line. However, with the angle it has, you'd probably not be able to get everything in the frame. You might try it with just a bit more in the frame if you have a shot like that.
Love the reflection and the curved lines made from top to bottom. I am on the fince about all the negative space on this one though because of the vertical. If feels like it comes across a littel unblanced to me. I am not sure if you have more room on the right or not, but if so, I might try to show where the log comes out of the water and remove a lot of the negative space..basically moving everything right. Still a very nice image and nicely seen. On a side note: I am not bothered by the angle this was taken at all.
Jenaya,
Sweet shot with artistic style. I agree with Brian's suggestion about a looser crop.
