Not quite free from the hand of man in this image (somebody sliced that orange), but this was the best shot I got of this species. Most of the shots were either eating peanut butter (much messier), in dense growth, or of a deformed individual, so I decided to go with this. The bottom of the orange in this shot was obscured by an obnoxiously bright oof leaf, so I stole the bottom from another shot taken at a slightly different angle and distance; resized the image to make the orange match, put both on the same layer and cloned between them.
7Dii, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Jobu Gimbal on RRS legs, f/5.6, 1/400, iso 1250, aperture priority, center weighted average metering, no compensation. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Full frame. Taken at 9:14 am on March 3rd at the Salineño refuge.
P.S. Larry, the docent at Salineño, pointed out that all five of the photos of this species in the I-bird app were taken there. If you look at them, you'll notice that three of them were taken on the same perch.

3 commentsI'd be more than happy to have one this nice of the Audubon's Dennis.
The large view shows off this species nicely, like the one foot clutching the 'hand of man' there too
Great story Dennis and a good pic to back it up. Smart looking bird and my sort of BG
Nice
