I went to Hawaii Volcano National Park 4 or 5 nights in February. I experienced plenty of clouds, but it also cleared out here and there — mostly when I packed up thinking the night would be over, of course. The winds were pretty good though, so the view completely changed every 15 minutes which was interesting.
This particular night I was walking the rim trail near the steam vents looking for something besides the typical crater shot. I didn't know what I was looking for but I knew it when I found it. Everything seen is on a slow burn from the trees to the stars...although different time scales.
While you can see some of the orange from the Kilauea crater in the clouds / steam in the sky, the camera really pulls it in on the long exposures.

5 commentsWhile I am usually allergic to orange clouds in night shots since they are caused by light pollution, knowing that it's a volcano causing it in this case makes this a really cool photo! The silhouettes are very great and the patches of stars are a great addition. Nice work!
Quite a scene, Jeff. Seeing the stars throught the gap in the orange clouds from the volcano adds a very interesting dimension to this. I'm pretty amazed to see Orion's belt and dagger peeking through. Neat catch.
Georgeous Jeff - we seem to have had the same idea
Fascinating image Jeff, beautiful elements from the ground to the steam and beyond. The clear area in the top center is perfect for a view of the stars, and I was happy to be able to make out Orion. Very well done.
