I've looked at clouds

"I've looked at clouds from both sides now"

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere,
I've looked at clouds that way.

I am fascinated by the clouds in Alaska. The came and went, changing all the time, as well as the landscape. I shot many pictures of them but usually as an addition to another subject. But in this picture I made it about them. I drove along the Denali highway with the rented suv and stared up at the sky. Now and then I would rush out to take the perfect picture and drive on, only to be inspired again and another stop. And so the day went in joyful search of these wondrous objects.

Please provide any critiques and suggestions. Thanks.

Yes, clouds are some fascinating stuff, I agree! This is a nice peaceful photo, with the big tree working well in the comp. My only suggestion would be to maybe take a slightly faster shutter speed next time, to prevent the whites from getting clipped. That has to be the biggest curse of digital photography, clipping highlights....

Igor:

Just one of several million possible cloud images on the drive, always changing!  The trees give a great leading curve to the left showing depth.  Near far compositions are always a good bet and the dwarf Birch in the foreground add a lot, even a small tint of orange. On my screen the highlights in the clouds are burned out a little, which depending on the raw image may allow some recovery of the tones and textures there.

The Denal highway is always a great drive through wilderness, the main point not to drive so as to "get there" since you are "there".

Thanks, Tom. I like that. Very true.

This is a fine "cloudscape", Igor.  and it's set off very well by the tree on the right.  A beautiful blue sky, a great collection of cumulus clouds and enough land to keep things interesting.

Nice cloudscape. I would agree with the other comments on the cloud highights.

I have always wanted to get up to Alaska. After I retire, some day...........

I like the composition a lot, Igor, but the light feels a bit harsh and contrasty in places. Maybe a good candidate for a monochrome?

Igor, The cloud highlightes are already mentioned and other than that this is a very pretty scene. It's very inviting and makes me wish I was standing there. Beautiful country! Nick

Hi Igor,

I really enjoy your vision on framing up this image, and the flow of the scene works very well for me with the coniferous trees leading the eye nicely. I agree with the other comments on the whites in the clouds, but I think the whites could be worked out to make this image very nice.
