I left the oof cattails protruding into the frame to give more of a sense of place.  Hope it works.  I did clone out one very bright tip sticking into the LRC.

7Dii, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, beanbag on truck window, f/5.6, 1/1000, iso 500, aperture priority, center weighted average metering, added 1 full stop of exposure compensation in the field.  Processed in LR5 (added another 1/2 stop of exposure and added some warming) and CS6 (boosted the detail in the bird with Topaz detail and increased saturation just a bit on the whole image).  Full frame.  Taken March 20th at 6:22 am, Buena Vista Ponds, Malheur NWR, Oregon.

Your comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Great shot I've been after these guys all week too. My 300 F4 is not long enough...and I am not happy with the 1.4 or 1.7 tc results on that lens. (Tokina 300 F4)... So my plan today is to try the clear image zoom on the Sony A77ii....I did some sample shots and it looks promising.  Anyway your shot is great. Thanks for making me want a longer lens....again...blush

I like this.  These guys are so skittish, I've never gotten one that I was happy with.  Very nice.

I agree with Gary and Dave, I have tried to get one of these birds in a decent shot for some time now and haven't been able too. Great positioning and the OOF cattails help I think.

Sounds like these birds are difficult Dennis, really do like your final result that certainly catches the moment.
