This is at home near my feeders. The background is sunlight on open forest. D800e, 300f4, 1.4tc, 1/500, f5.6, ISO 800, tripod.
C &C highly regarded.

For ISO800, that looks really good. It's sharp and great focus on the subject. I like the smooth background; the colors compliment the bird well. Oh and good catchlight in it's eye, that definitely makes it.

Excellent image of a common species. In the larger version the finch just pops off the background. Good detail and an excellent background. Consider removing the OOF limb in the background?

Nice pose on the bird, good head turn and nice techs. Like others wish the OOF branch wasn't there. Not sure if you could ahve nmoved in the fireld or not, but at 300mm, it would have only taken a very small move to the right to avoid the branch in the BG. Sometimes, that move is easier said than done though.

A very nice capture of this very small bird, Jim! Great exposure and focus plus I love the colors, especially the complimentary color of the background. It sets off the colors on the bird very nicely. I actually don't mind the background branch at all, in fact I think it accentuates the 3D effect and gives the scene a little more environmental context.
