June 1, 2015 at The Wedge in Newport Beach, we watched the owner of this board catch dozens of waves and photographed many wonderful rides. Late in the afternoon, the board washed up nearly on our feet. When a board is broken the only thing salvageable is the fins. The rest is trash. This photo tells the story of the power of the waves at The Wedge. This beach has huge waves because of the confluence of the normal wave direction and the rebound of the waves off the adjacent jetty. When surf is "up" this beach has the largest waves in Southern California. This beach has waves that don't roll in from a distance like most other Sourthern California beaches. They tend to curl and break right on the shore. Fortunately the owner of this board was not hurt when this took place. We spoke and he was philosophical about challenging The Wedge and losing his board as a result.

1 commentsAn image that says it all. Bummer for the surfer. Boards aren't cheap and their owners get attached to them if they are "just right".
