A few years ago I decided bird photography would make an interesting project on which to focus (no pun intended) my photographic interests on. Through this I became an avid birder and have enjoyed considerable pleasure from this activity. So I was particularly saddened to have to witness this poor gull. I just wanted to reach out and remove this plastic ring from its neck. One reads about this sort of thing and sees pictures of wildlife affected by our littering, but to see it in person is especially distressing.
Technically not my best shot (early morning, little light, long ways off, hand held), but it's a graphic reminder to take care in how we dispose of our garbage.

6 commentsDefinitely a strong environmental statement here, Allen. Technically, it looks like your focus was on the rock in front of the gull, but for what this image shows, I don't think that's important.
Regardless of the technical items on this image the scene makes a strong statement about discarded trash and how it impacts the natural world. Not knowing where the litter came from I can't place accusations beyond saying everyone needs to do their share of policing the unwanted debris.
Thanks for sharing this one Allen......
It is shameful that we leave any stuff harmful to any creature. This is really bioregretable.
This shot tells the story of how plastics snare wildlife. Well done documenting this event....................Jim
This image illustrates the problem very well. May not be the sharpest image, but it is a story telling one. Thanks for sharing.
Its unfortunate that the image is soft because it is an excellent capture of a growing problem, trash in our seas.
