Haleakala Heat

I made it up to the summit of Haleakala 2x during a recent trip to Maui for sunrise, along with every other tourist that visits the island!  Unfortunately I didn't have the luxury of scouting out compositions the day before, since this was the morning of my 1st full day there.  I headed away from the crowds on a hiking trail and visibility was pretty good 45 min before sunrise to pick a spot. The fog on my 2nd trip was much more problematic.  I am still getting to know my Nikon 810, but was very impressed with the dynamic range my images had, making processing them a much simpler endeavor.  I took one image for the general exposure of the land forms and eliminated flare and the reduce contrast it caused by placing a finger over the sun.  A second exposure was taken for the sky and sunburst.  The 2 images were manually blended so as to keep the sun star and sky, but eliminate the flare and accompanying lack of contrast.  I have played around with different color balances for a warmer or cooler image, and settled on this.  Any thoughts on this appreciated.  I can not remember if it actually looked warmer or cooler, but this rendition seems natural to me.

Harry, a very interesting image. There is a lot in this image to hold the attention and look at. It keeps my eye moving around through the image. The light is really sweet bring out the color in the almost moonscape. A nice leading line in the center of the image through the crater, the surrounding clouds the sun burst and the nice color in the sky. Beautiful image.

Really nice comp with the flow going toward the sun. I think you've got the warmth just right. Really unique image with a more full sun in the shot - feels like you've captured the feeling of the place.

The colors and contrast look right for the conditions (with the sun in the frame).  You've got a fine sweep through the foregounnd with that S of rubble plus the sky and sun fit right in.  Very well done.

wonderful, sure management of this difficult against-light, without excess of flare or burned zones.

Superb classic composition.  All the best,
Sandro

The comp is great with the lines in the rocks and the layer of clouds, and you mastered the dynamic range perfectly. This looks very natural to me! Looks like a really barren place.

You pretty much nailed it with the blend, nice work with a difficult shot. The "S" curve is nice and takes one right into the scene. I could see this going a tad warmer.....

Beautiful picture, I like the composition and the lights. It's a very nice post processing, the result is, for sure, unique and outstanding. I love it.

Beautiful Harry.  Love how you handled the dynamic range and the blend looks spot on to me.  I'm glad you allowed a little flare  on the center peak.  Looks very natural and the color balance looks fine to me.  Nice image.

The color temp looks spot on to me Harry. I really like the sweep of this. It's quite a grand scene.
