Roseate Skimmer

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted July 13, 201576 views5 comments

Native to the Americas, and one of the most aggressive insect predators out there..

I did see it eat a very small fly, but that shot didn't work out. I've read that they will consume insects near their size, hope to get lucky one day.. Hope springs eternalcrying

F/22, 1/200th, ISO 500, 5DM2, 300mm f/2.8 + 2x ext. with fill flash.

Technique: This was shot around 11:00am and sunny, clear. To overcome the hard light I used a 2 stop camera bias, and pumped up the flash slightly to fill in..

Wow, Howard. Amazing subject detail and color. Expertly captured and artistically rendered DF, espcially the use of the fill flash. Lighitng is perfect. devil devil

Nice and sharp with an unusual belly view of this skimmer.  Background is nice, but dark.  The thumbnail does not show much separation of subject and BG, but was pleasantly surprised with the larger views..............................Jim

Howard, you've got excellent details in this skimmer with a good variety of subtle colors especially in the thorax.  The dof that the flash lets you get looks great especially in the far wings against the lighter background.
