I have numerous boring images of Red-winged Blackbirds, but this one is a little different. It was one of the brightest, hottest days we've had. The chest area is shaded by the bird and I couldn't pull much detail out of it without making it look bad, but I like the composition. Please let me know what you think.

2 commentsGreat job handling that light, Greg. I'm seeing detail in the blacks almost everywhere. I think people get way too carried away trying to get detail out of a black bird that you would never see in the field. This is an excellent compromise and a very nice composition.
I think the vertical framing suits the tall reeds well, and the comp works fine with the bird looking into the negative space Greg.
It's tough shooting past noon on a clear bright sunny day, you often run into exposure problems like you've experienced here.
Top light is flat & generally unflattering..
Although you did a great job holding the line in this one.
Best to shoot in better light if at all possible, saves you a lot of headache
