I have posted this photo but it was a long time ago before we were posting larger versions. Recently I reprocessed it as it's one of my favorite mammal shots. I selectively darkened the background in this version to try to put more emphasis on the hippo and cropped it a bit more tightly. The background story on this shot is we were staying at Ngepi Camp on the Kavango River in Namibia. We went out on a boat trip and the guide brought us to an island in the middle of the river. There was a pool on the other side where a lone male hippo spent his time. To show us he was the boss of the area he burst out of the water and threw a mouthful of water into the air. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

7 commentsStunning image Nate. I like the water spray, and the fact that it doesn't obscure the eye. Really nice.
Wonderful moment and water spray! I like very much the light. The large version is a must see.
Nate,
A shot we all want, fabulous capture of the moment
This is excellent in every way, Nate. The only way to come up with suggestions is to speculate in "a perfect world" sort of way. And then the only thing I can see would be to wish for a little more space bottom right to catch all the erupted white water frenzy of his explosion. I think you choice to selectively darken the background adds great drama...great choice.
Terrific frame, very nicely captured !
