Another image from a few years ago in the now completely devastated Cache Creek Wilderness. The fire perimeter maps show no portion of it untouched by the historic, massive Rocky fire which refuses to be contained. Every morning and evening the huge Chinook helicopters thunder over my house on their way to and from the blaze. I'm reaching the acceptance stage in my grief although if it is proven to be human-set I'll be right back at anger. ![]()
Since the cliff in the background of the previous image was of interest to some, I've made it the feature of this post. That magnificent oak has seen so much but is likely no more.

7 commentsAlthough the composition is simpler in this image I do like it more because the colors seem more natural. The gentle light gives credence to the greens in this oak and the grass has good texture and richness of color.
Sweet light and nice comp. The colors all come together nicely as well. Works well for me.
I really like the dappled light in this image. The warm tone definitely invites the eye in. I also like the warm/cool contrasts in the cliff behind. My only nit would be the tree in the background being partially cut off by the frame.
works for me. Wonderful colors dave! And it comes all together nicely.
Having lived in Davis and in the Bay Area for 10 years (30 years ago) this image "says California" for me. Cache Creek is a place I spent some time and it is sad for us. The color contast between the greens and the browns and the greys of the mountains brings back pleasant memories. Nice work.
Very nice comp! The diagonal transition between the warm sunlit grasses and the cold rocky parts in the shadow is very attractive and would have worked well on its own for me. But the tree adds a nice anchor point and completes the scene. great job!
Another fine oak woodland scene, Dave. The shapes and colors come together nicely.
