Today is World Lion Day.
There's just no other place that produces male lions this good looking this consistently - it has to be the Kalahari! I photographed this guy back in November 2012, and he was seen often between the Rooiputs and Kij Kij waterholes that year. Sadly he hasn't been seen since late 2013, and rumour has it that he was baited out of the Kgalagadi by hunters, much like what happened to the famous male lion from Hwange recently...such a sad state of affairs.

3 commentsBetween you and Ken, the lion show has been excellent. It is unfortunate that these creatures are turning into parlor displays for a trophy hunter's amusement. This is a nice image of a strong lion that looks like he was living a pretty good life. Composition, subject sharpness, and BG are very pleasing to the eye.....................................Jim
Very handsome n healthy specimen, purrfect for World Lion Day.
Love the look and redish tone in the mane.

Grand specimen! I, too, am drawn to the contasting tones of dark and red in the mane. The yellow eyed stare is super and bit of dust floating near his feet a bonus. Thanks for posting this one.
