Three Gorges Dam

So China has been awarded the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.  Those of you who have been there know how bad the pollution can be especially in winter when the coal fired power plants are working overtime.  I have been there twice and even without lung disease, it is not fun to breathe the air.  Here is an image of the Three Gorges Dam, a clean source of power but you will notice it makes no difference.  This is May when it is not cold.  This image was cleaned up with the miraculous dehaze filter in Lightroom.  Additionally, it was white balanced.  But I am also posting the unscrubbed version.  Please wear your respirator while viewing.  I will not be responsible for bronchospastic pixels,,,

No haze filter.  Could be hazardous to your health...

Illustrates the pollution problem very well.  I do wish the cleaned up version was just a bit darker in the center.  Thanks for sharing.

While I do think the dehaze filter did a marvellous job, I'd say the original version properly processed would have much more of an impact (unless you want to focus on the dam itself, which came with its own set of environmental risks...).

Yikes, gives me recall to playing HS sports during the early to mid 60's in So Cal. If the USA and California especially had not pushed for cleaner running vehicles back then we could live here with all the polluted air......frown

David, this is a fine example for the gallery theme for EPJ. Thanks for sharing.....enlightened

I hope everyone saw the artical in the NY Times today: Study links polluted air in China to 1.6 million deaths per year.

I would also encourage viewers to rent the Chinese film:  Up the Yangtze from 2007 which discusses social issues of the dam:

When the Three Gorges Dam makes life hard for the Yu family, daughter Yu Shui must take a job aboard a cruise ship, where she enters into a dizzying microcosm of modern China. Meanwhile, her parents face the rising waters of the Yangtze.

It is a well done film.  I found it on Netflix.
