Sunrise shot on a very chilly morning in the eastern Sierra. There was a hillside covered with these pink (rather than orange/red) paintbrush but I liked this specimen over by the grassy lake with the pink light on the mountain beyond. For a drought year it was surprisingly green up there with a lot of showy flowers.

13 commentsLovely image! The pink paintbrush grab my attention but there are so many other little details to enjoy that the image keeps my eye wandering throughout. Fantastic work.
It's a very pleasant scene, very inviting. I wasn't sure about the pink strip at the top, but I concluded that you actually do need it because it adds some different hues to the otherwise very green frame and balances the red flowers in the foreground. Nicely done!
Dave, the full size is excellent. No thoughts for change here for me, just a very nice image and glad you found such a nice view in this dreaded drought.
So many beautiful details, and they all fit together so well that it's a joy spending time wadering around the scene. Even the dead trees contribute to a well-balanced, colorful view of this place. Well done!
Lovely detailed layers in this comp, Dave. I just hope it's not a drought decade. I like the addition of the light at the top of the frame. It really gives the image depth and scale.
Really nice image, Dave. Fine summer Sierra scene. Great to hear everything is not brown up there. There is some hope. :)
Lovely field of wildflowers with nice composition including the background mountains. Congrats on a beautiful image.
Great job with this. You managed to capture the beauty of the scene without really have a super-specific focal point or subject, which is really hard to do. I feel like I'm sitting there on my camping pad eating lunch in this lovely meadow. Nice work. BTW, in Oregon, above about 5000 or so feet, the Indian Paintbrush is this magenta color rather than the orangey-red...not sure if that's the case down there, but it is here. It's my very favorite wildflower.
I agree on keeping the magenta slope in the bg...it keeps the eye from focusing on the fairly non-descript treeline beyond the meadow, so we really can relish the scene and feel the context.
Well balanced shot Dave, the FG vegetation is such a nice mix. These alpine gardens are so fun to discover among the big peaks. Glad things are blooming up there. Sure, there are cropping options but I do like this as well as any of the other options. Nice find.
I like this a lot, and I agree with Marylynne's comments. It's a very plesaant image to kind of wander around in, just the my eye would do if I were sitting on a rock looking around.
One thing you might consider is bringing down the blue in the snag on the left and in some of the rocks. The light here is very nice and you did a good job of working with it.
I am glad the area there looks so verdant. The high country seems to escaping the worst of this drought. Just curious, Dave, but where is this?

I like the colors, layers and depth of the image. I am on the fence and could go either way with the strip of color at the top. I think it works with it and would work very well without it.
Like looking through a doorway into beauty and splendor. Lovely exquisite flowers brighten this scene ...saturation takes me right to the edge of believability and stops just perfect...not over-cooked. Just rich. The doorway is both its strength as it seems to be a bit narrow scroll that is stretched in front of the viewer. ...and its weakness as my preference is for a slightly wider comp. Well done.
Wonderfullly balanced light. Nicely done.
