A last shot from March 2nd at Falcon State Park. I had a lot of opportunities from male cardinals but not too many with a bg that I liked. I'm not sure about the framing in this one. I tried the bird off-center in both directions and ended up bringing it back to almost centered.
7Dii, 300mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, hand held on picnic table, f/7.1, 1/400, iso 1250, aperture priority, center weighted average metering with no compensation. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Processed the bird separately from the bg to accent the plumage detail and increase the saturation a bit. Cropped to 9.5MP from a horizontal original. Taken at 3:04 pm.
I appreciate your comments on the Titmouse and look forward to your input on this image.
Thanks,

10 commentsNice one Dennis. This guy really jumps off the page. Well done.
Cool bird, nicely standing out from the backgrounds.... Cheers, Hans
Sometimes centered is just best. Very eye-catching image.
The centered comp looks fine to me here. I like the bg because it shows where the Cardinal is, but is soft enough not to be distracting. This is a beautiful Cardinal, his feathers look beautiful and in perfect condition.
Centered works well for this setting/perch Dennis, lovely shade of red.. This males plumage is in great condition too, no summertime molting blues here
Like the head turn & sharply raised crest, well done!
Beautiful details in the reds Dennis, he jumps off of that neutral background and even though it's busy that doesn't detract from the image. My eye wants to put him slightly to the left in the frame but I don't know what else you have on the right so hard to say for sure, I think the centered treatment works reasonably well.
Crop looks fine to me. Nice head turn and eye contact. Background is busy, but not really distacting. My first impression is that perhaps it could go a tad brighter overall?
A handsome cardinal you have here Dennis
I like the way he contrasts so nicely with his surroundings, this comp works for me too.
Sweet One!
Really nice Cardinal image Dennis. It definatley pops.
Looks like you captured this guy in muted light which brings out those nice reds. Center comp looks fine as it looks like there's some darker elements on the right that may distract the viewer if the comp had more room on the right....................Jim
