Jackal and Springbok

Everyone's on alert in this image, which was taken in Kgalagadi in South Africa a few years back.  Of course, the diminutive black-backed jackal poses very little threat to the springbok, and eventually it decided to sit down for a nap while the antelope went on grazing.

Because of the tight proximity of the subjects in the frame, a squarish crop may have worked alright to better balance them out, but I opted in this case to leave a bit more room ahead of the main subject.

I knew this was from the Kgalagadi when I saw the thumbnail.

Love the juxtaposition and that amazing Kalahari light!

I am a sucker for rim lighting.  Nice.  I also like the way the springbok is rendered, barely identifiable.  Only tweak I can find is to possibly darken the bright bit of oof foreground just under the jackal's frong legs.

Thanks guys.  Lon, I think it's some grass that was in front of my car.  You're right that some selective darkening or burning may work to "bring it in line."

Beautiful light... I love the sunlit edge around the jackal and the way you placed the springbok in the nice recognizable bokeh.
