Dusk in the Mountains

Hi again, everyone! Here's another of what will probably be too many elk images Jenaya, Josiah and I share with you over the coming months!

My son, Josiah, and I decided to check this area in Jasper National Park one last time before heading east in search of a good bull at the end of the day. We walked up to this small ridge and didn't find an elk, so we started to head back to the truck to head out when this beautiful bull stepped out of the forest. What followed was a race to burn through our memory cards as this guy put on a veritable show for us. We swapped lenses, camera bodies, angles, tripods, releases, you name it. Eventually he bedded down and dusk moved to twilight and we just sat in the field together and soaked in the experience as he listened to other bulls calling in the distance and invariably responded. Quite the evening, to say the least.

This frame came from the latter part of the evening and probably my 5th or 6th angle (I ended up photographing him from angles covering over 180 degrees of sweep!). I had just switched my 500mm with Josiah for the 300mm when he heard a bugle in the forest behind us and zeroed in on it, giving me this fantastic look and expression.

Happy to receive comments, critiques and suggestions!

Wonderful pose, with those huge antlers so well outlined against the light mountains in the background. He looks like he is sniffing the air. Without the explanation, I wouldn't be sure if he was just getting up or standing. What a marvelous moment that must have been for you and your son.

This rocks John - love the pose, the late light, the depth with the mountain behind...and of course the soft colours.

Wonderful scene, John. The soft colors and contrast are quite nice, as Morkel pointed out.  Nicely composed too!

Thanks, all! So pleased you like this one...it's a personal favourite in large part because of the amount of time I spent tweaking the overall scene/angle/comp and the rather unique pose, not to mention the fun I was having with Josiah photographing this guy!

Thanks again...

Great moment to see and capture.  All the elements came together nicely.  When scrolling down the sky was eliminated and the focus went more to the elk... which I liked.  The background is oof and without the sky the mountain is given less importance.  Would mean a square format.  Just a thought... a personal preference.

This works for me far better, love large expanse of space and regal position of the subject, nice one.

Hi John,

Nicely done...always wonderful when a good experience yields good photos! Good memories are great in themselves, but good memories with great shots are SO much better! enlightened

Looking forward to seeing more!
