As long as I've gotten started with heron's I thought I'd post a sequence from the same outing that I'm finally getting around to working.  This heron caught a really nice Sculpin and was just rearranging it nicely when it was interrupted, which will be the subject of the next post.  As they say stay tuned....

7Dii, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Jobu Gimbal on RRS legs, f/7.1, 1/2500, iso 500, manual exposure.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to 7.6 MP.  Taken July 1st at Big Beef Creek on the Hood Canal in Washington at 8:23 am.

I appreciate all the comments on my last Heron post and look forward to your input on this one.

Thanks,

A heron hunting is a study in patience.  This is a real nice catch Dennis.  You never know what the heron will come up with.  A tasty meal here.  Nice positioning in the frame.  Good detail in harsh light.

Like the open mouth of the fish -- might improve by burning out the bright light on the rocks -- content aware does a good job on reducing the birght lights

Dennis, nice catch of the action!  Also think all of the objects in the water, not sure what they are, add to the image.  Looking forward to your next heron post.  Thanks for sharing.

Nice timing Dennis, I think you could have got away with f/5.6 whilst still retaining the SS or higher. Hard to see at the larger size, but maybe 1/3200 SS just to really freeze that moment, not hard for the 5D cool. For me, a hint more head turn towards you so the head was more 'square on' I feel may have been better, likewise a bit more selective sharpening on the 'catch' but this may be personal tastes? Well done in achieving what you did, will look for the next instalment.

Nice timing on this shot Dennis. Great habitat scene and I love that open mouth of the fish. Looking forward to the next...
