Bald Eagle Chasing Heron

This spring on the Hood Canal was an extremely eventful one for me. Not only were there lots of eagles visiting the spawning beds this year, there seemed to be more inter-action between the eagles, herons and crows. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing what's in store for us next spring.

Canon 7DII; 600mm; Gitzo tripod & RRS BH-55 ballhead; 1/1600; f8; ISO 1250; nearly full frame vertical crop from a horizontal original.

All your comments and suggestions are very much appreciated.

Wow!!!  What a great moment, Ken.  The banked angles of the birds, crossed wings and wonderful eye contact all add up to an absolutely great action image.  Well done.

frown Wowsers, you've got a lot going on here Ken, and all in the right way! Killer shot of the heron with prey, killer shot of the eagle, epic shot of them combined with intersecting wings. OUTSTANDING.

Well done. Great capture of two great birds. The flight angles are awesome. I am guessing the 600mm lens caused some compession and depth of field impact.

I really like the action in this one Ken. Must of been a complete blast to witness and shoot this. I like how the wings cross and form a diamond shape. I also like the head on look from the Bald Eagle as well as the slight head turn from the GBH. Congrats on a cool image!

The DOF and sharpness of this image are impressive.  I have never been out to this location even though it is only an hour away from my home.  Most people go in June and July for the action.  Any other time of year good?  Right now, the salmon are spawning in Puget Sound (McClain Creek) and I assume Hood Canal.

"Thanks everyone for your encouraging comments on this photo."

David, it's possible eagles may show up out there in the fall for the salmon run. It would probably be worth the time to go out and check it out just to see.

Awesome catch Ken!  Love the way the wings of these 2 big birds intersect, the fish and the stare of the eagle make it special as well. devil
