Autumn on Ice

With recent colder temperatures, and with the abundance of water in the washes in the eastern region of Zion this autumn, there are ample opportunities for abstracts such as this.

Gorgeous, the cool /warm combo is a winner.  Looks like you had a fantastic time there this year.  Wonder how navigating the Narrows was this year.  Probably pretty challenging.  Hope you took a lot of these type of shots, would love to see more of them.  The conditions are so fleeting, it's nice to get as many as possible while they last.

This is a fantastic abstract, Jim. Excellent composition and I love the color tones, detail and textures. The higher res version especially shows the fine details of this image. Really nice work on this!

All of your posts lately have been superb Jim, I just haven't had time to respond, but this (for my tastes) is the best.  A truly well crafted image.

The curves in the ice seem to hold the leaf. Great composition with the parallel lines, also in the leaf. Then the combination of colours... Simply beautiful.

Outstanding!  The lines in the ice are placed perfectly in the frame.  I also love the warm/cool contrast between red/orange leaf and blue ice.  It is elegant and stylish.  I have no nits or suggestions.  I'm just enjoying it!

This is fabuolous Jim  I love the cold blue and the orange leaf.  The diagonals in the ice and the leafe (dying) as obstruction of water all just tell a great story while still being a very graphic, not quite abstract image. I like this a lot.

Very exceptional in its complex simplicity. Love the looped diagonal lines the leaf appeared to create. Wonderful work, Jim.

The variety of subtle colors in the leaf help this really stand out, Jim.  They are set off so well by the clean diagonal lines in the iced.  Excellent!

This has turned out so nicely. The subject matter is striking and your choice of compostion really does justice to it. In addtion, the soft colors are so nice to see (especially in this day and age where super saturation and contrast have become the norm).

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everybody for all of your wonderful and positive remarks!  Comparisons to Guy Tal's work is certainly high praise.

P.S. - There was a little accumulating snow late yesterday at the higher elevations in Zion.  I went back up to the eastern region early this morning.  And there is still some good autumn color to be found up there too.  I've been spending most of my time there during my visit to the park this year.  I'm heading back up there again this afternoon.

Jim, very nice composition with the maple leaf against the lines and blue of the ice, and lines in the ice going to the corners. A thought to increase the play of the leaf against the ice would be to select just the leaf and warm its white balance and increase its saturation/contrast a bit.

Hi Jim,

This image is great with the color combination of ice blue and orange/red color in the maple leaf. In fact, this is one of the most attractive maple leafs I have seen in quite a while. You have done and excellent job in finding this image, and presenting it to us. Just some gorgeous work in photography! devil

Jaw dropping gorgeous, Jim.  The golds against the blues is so very nice, and then the wonderful design in the ice .... incredible.  For me, this is fine art photography.

Beautifully composed and presented, Jim.  Goes to show that there's much more photography opportunities than iconic images in Zion.  Print it BIG !
