Hairy Woodpecker

At a provincial park not very far from the city the birds are fed by everyone who visits.  The chickadees and nuthatches become very tame.  They follow you around and if no food is forthcoming they will even sit on your camera.  The woodpeckers are more aloof and don't come very often to the banquet.  A couple of weeks ago when I was out there a beautiful male Hairy came by to check out the scene.  Nikon D810, 300 2.8 plus 1.4 tc, f 5.6, 1/1250, ISO 640

Thanks for looking and critiques appreciated.

Not the most common perch for a woodpecker, I'd think, but it works pretty well. Colorwise if fits the BG perfectly. Pleasant shot, May. Nice to have such a park .... Cheers, Hans

Lovely, May.  Is that a fire grate it's perched on?  It makes a lovely contrast to the soft lines and B&W plumage of the woodpecker.

Nice detail in the woodpecker May. Not a perfect perch but still a cool image. It's funny how much they look so much like a Downy but with a huge beak! I always see the Downy's here. Nice job!

LOVE this one, May! In fact I think I love everything about it...not only no "nits" from me but lots of applause. Beautiful light, wonderful tones, textures and details. If it's not a "perfect perch" it's still a way cool one IMO!

Sounds like a smorgasbord of both birdseed and birds May! I like the rusty iron fence. It makes for a unique perch that I normally wouldn't see a woodpecker sitting on. Nice work!

Very nice image.  Pose, light and exposure are excellent.  The perch is not my favorite.
