Lichenization
by gary phillips
This is from last week on a fly fishing trip to the Madison River in Montana. The fishing was great but Lenticular clouds were forming in the afternoon and after packing my camera pack all day I was finally able to get into some photography. This rock caught my eye and I spent the last hour of daylight trying to make something work. I liked the lichen pattern on the boulder and this is my favorite of the evening.

13 commentsWe used to date glacial moranial events by measuring the size of the lichen circles. The one we used was Rizocharpon Geograficum and advanced the circle maybe a cm per 100 years in the area we worked.
Nice image, enjoy the B&W as always! Tom
Curious why you used an ND8 at ISO 400 rather than going without a filter and dropping your ISO?
You will have to let me borrow that 24-195 lens sometime. Never used one.
Looks good--I like the contrasty light and the clouds are awesome. The lichen encrusted rock has some very nice texture...................Jim
I love this! My first thought was not lichen, but petroglyphs! Very cool find. And I like your composition, the light and how this was all framed. Awesome clouds too!
Harley hit on my only suggestion, and that would be to do some creative work to minimize the blown out snow in the lower left. Not a huge issue, but just something to really put this image a little higher up on the awesome scale. ;-)
I'm curious too how the color version looks? I might guess if the rock has any orange or warm tones it would contrast nicely with the blue in the sky. But b&w works perfectly here too.
Very nice light and shadow.
